TRACK & FIELD - JUNE 10, 2008

Congratulations to members of the Track & Field Team on their outstanding performances at the OFSAA Track Championships held in Hamilton last week.  The team returned home with the OFSAA overall Midget Boys Team Title, and scored enough points to be the second in high school track & field team in the province.  A total of one gold and six silver, and one bronze medal were collected.  The midget boys relay team set a new OFSAA record while the senior girls sprint and mile relay teams posted the second fastest times in Canada.

It was a great season.  Thanks to the coaches and athletes for their hard work and season successes.

"Relay for Life" - June 10, 2008

On Friday night eight staff members and four of their family participated in the overnight 12 hour "Relay for Life" to raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society.  This year the team raised $6138.99 and the event raised over 1/2 million dollars.  Thanks to all those who sponsered them.

Dragon Boat Team - June 10, 2008

A huge congratulations to the PHS Dragon Boat Team!  They did an amazing job representing the school this past weekend.  This year was the first year that we were able to have two boats race in the Ontario High School dragon boat championship.  Out junior boat did well, placing in the B Division on Sunday.  Our senior boat made it into the A Division, making a Pickering High School record - they raced their fastest time ever:  2 mins and 12 sec.  This time placed them among the top five schools in Ontario, and the fastest team in Durham!  Our team also raced in a community festival on Saturday, against seasoned adult teams.  Pickering High School made it into the C Division on this day, and received many compliments on their awesome performance.  People couldn't believe they were a high school team who had only been paddling for a month!  Congratulations again to the Dragon Boat Team.  You should all be very proud of your performance and spirit this past weekend!

A Message from the Principal

June, 2008

Another year has been completed at Pickering High School with many student successes! I am very proud of the academic, athletic and co-curricular successes of our students this year.

To our graduates, I wish you continued success and I hope that you will hold fond and special memories of PHS. I will see you at Commencement in November with your caps, gowns, awards and diplomas.

We have overcome "The Year of Construction " and are ready to occupy the new addition. The new gym opened in March and our Physical Education classes were able to use it prior to the end of the year. In early June, a pep rally and gym opening event took place to honour our athletes and our athletic accomplishments this year. The event culminated with the unveiling of our new Pickering Trojan Mascot that was developed and produced by our technology students. PHS spirit was contagious on that day!

The new addition is scheduled to be complete in August 2008. Staff have been incredibly understanding and accommodating to moving classrooms, workrooms and packing for the "big move". It is very exciting and each time I wear my work boots and pink hard hat onto the construction site, I see the growth of our new classes and I look forward to September when our students and staff will have the opportunity to experience the new addition. A reminder to our PHS neighbours and community members that the new track and field are not to be used for the summer. When the fences are removed in September, that area will be available for school use.

Thank you to everyone in the Pickering community for a wonderful year and I hope you have an enjoyable and restful summer.
